A study shows that the meat industry can save 28% in energy consumption

It was presented on Wednesday in Vic in the Chamber of Commerce and it has participated companies osonencasVic – Dolors Altarriba
Energy costs are higher in Spain compared to other European countries and this makes companies less competitive. In 2011 in Spain the effort of an industrialist “here with respect to a European was 13.5% higher in electricity and 9.3% less in gas. But in 2015 both rates will rise, 25% And 6.14%, respectively. ” José Collado, President of Fecic, explained during the debate that followed the presentation of a study on energy efficiency and water use in the meat industry. The study are actually two. One that values the energy efficiency of the meat industries based on three companies of Osona and three of the Garrotxa and one on the consumption of water (see highlighted).

Once analyzed the companies, the study finds that in the case of industrial cold, the control with an electronic expansion valve, the minimum saving is 7% and the defrost by hot gas is 5%. Making a control of the temperatures of the refrigeration cycle, the saving is of 3% and doing of the cameras this rises up to 10%. Other options are to put a system of floating condensation that saves up to 8% of energy and with a frequency inverter in the compressors this savings can reach up to 20%. In each of these proposals has been analyzed which investment should make each empersa according to the square meters, what savings in kilowatts, tons of CO2 and money would have and the necessary amortization.

Jordi Coll, responsible of Energy Tools, who has done the study, also spoke about other improvements such as air curtains for EPAR environments (a saving of 6%), abrinsinflatable in loading and unloading docks, have a management system Of energy or make the change of lighting by leds.

The conclusions of the study find that the analyzed network facilities have “overall a high degree of efficiency and optimization,” explained Coll, who also believes that in most of them there are no partial measurement systems or connected to any management system that allow Establish the relation of consumption and cost associated with the industrial cold.

If each company does seven actions on average, the estimated energy savings have a value of 4,017,286 kWh and associated annual economic savings of 284,425 euros compared to an investment of 1,171,694 euros.

The return on investment is around 4.2 years and an average savings per center of 28%.

Improvements to Osona companies

The companies Splendid Foods, Carcass Industries Montronill and Embutidos Espina participated in the study that was presented this Wednesday. With them, José Collado moderated a roundtable to find out what actions are being taken to companies around energy efficiency. He announced that he has just finished a document that will be “the bible to follow for every industrial sector in energy efficiency.”

The representative of Embutidos Espina, Francisco Cuní, explained that the company already has a cogeneration plant and save on hot water issues, in addition to the changes they have made in lighting. Manuel Téllez, from Montronill, explained that changes have already been made in 50% of the lighting of the plant and that the heating system has changed with a heat pump that replaces diesel in 70% “and we expect to reach 100 % “. David García-Gassull, of Splendid Foods, explained that on a permanent basis “we apply technology to save both for consumption and for contracting and this has meant reducing by 30% direct consumption in water.” None of the three planned for now and as long as it does not change the regulation of self-consumption facilities of electricity with alternative energies.

Diverse and tailor-made technology to treat water

The study of water management was done by the Catalan Water Partnership. Its manager, Xavier Amores, explained that visits were made to seven companies, two of which are osonencas -patel and Salgot-. Amores explained that the food industry consumes between 11% and 12% of the water used in manufacturing in the EU and that wastewater treatment, which must be done, represents the main investment in environmental correction, more than 50 % of the total.

The solution for Amores happens to have quality water that is sometimes from sources such as wells; Recover sewage or take advantage of rainwater for certain cleaning jobs in the industry; Optimize cleanings; To apply a good practice eguit to spend less, and to apply diverse and adapted systems for the purification and reutilization of the water with less energetic cost. As “the consumptions in the industries, are very different, it is difficult a unique solution and must be adapted”, explains Amores. He spoke of options such as “take water from condensers that can be purified or make a joint water purification between different companies.” In a large slaughterhouse, for example, reuse allows 25 m3 / h of treated wastewater to be obtained.
