Artificial Intelligence to increase production and competitiveness of farms

The Eurecat technology center has developed and validated a new model based on Artificial Intelligence for farms in the pig sector, with the aim of helping companies make more informed decisions to increase their productivity and competitiveness.

The project, promoted by Eurecat‘s Applied Artificial Intelligence Unit, has been carried out in collaboration with the group of companies OPP Group, dedicated to accompanying and transferring knowledge for the technological and productive improvement of the pig sector, which has provided the data from your pilot farm for model development.

Within the framework of the project, called “Advanced analytics in pig farms”, Eurecat has studied a set of operational data related to pig farming farms, integrating the management data of the reproductive cycle, feeding and replacement, based on which has created a new smart model. In addition, the implemented methodology has made it possible to identify the key variables to obtain good results and has defined a list of recommendations to contribute to the productivity of the farms.

With the improvement obtained in decision-making, the companies in the sector “are not only more efficient and competitive, but also position themselves at the forefront of sustainable innovation and are an essential part and driver of the transformation of society, more ecological and digital “, says the director of the Eurecat Applied Artificial Intelligence Unit, Xavier Domingo.

According to the researcher of the Eurecat Applied Artificial Intelligence Unit, Josep Pijuan, it is necessary “to measure what is happening in the farms to know where we have room for improvement and to implement advanced services that advise, automate and optimize their management”.

The project is funded by the Technology Transfer of the Rural Development Program of Catalonia 2014-2020, co-financed by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (FEADER) of the European Commission and by the Department of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food of the Generalitat of Catalonia.

The Eurecat technology center participates in several projects that “have managed to value the importance of good data collection and demonstrate the potential they have, through the use of machine learning techniques, in the productive improvement of the agricultural and livestock sectors”, he explains Pijuan.

In the words of the researcher of the Eurecat Applied Artificial Intelligence Unit, Lluís Echeverria, thanks to new digital technologies, such as the Internet of Things (IOT) or Artificial Intelligence, “it has been possible to implement an intelligent system to support the decision that offers a substantial improvement in the optimization of productivity in farms in the pig sector “, which has also shown that” these technologies also take place in the agri-food sector “.

Digitization and data collection has allowed the introduction of Machine Learning in the livestock sector, “demonstrating a great advance in automation, management and optimization of tasks on farms”, adds the researcher of the Applied Artificial Intelligence Unit of Eurecat, Marc Ribalta.
