Project summary

Poultry production, and animal production in general for human consumption, prioritizes ensuring the welfare and health of the animals. If they do not enjoy an adequate level of welfare and good health, they cannot reach their full growth potential. Furthermore, this can negatively affect the sanitary and organoleptic quality of the meat.

For this reason, the need to deepen the understanding of the impact that increasing sustainability in production and reducing nitrogen load in waste have on the welfare, health, and production of fast-growing chickens has been identified. These chickens are a fundamental pillar in the supply of quality, healthy, and affordable meat for the food chain.

Likewise, it is essential to promote a viable agricultural income and the resilience of the agricultural sector throughout the territory of the European Union. These actions contribute to improving long-term food security, preserving agricultural diversity, and ensuring the economic sustainability of agricultural production in the European context.

Therefore, the main objective of the project is to optimize the nutrition, especially related to nitrogen, of broiler chickens in order to:

  • Improve environmental sustainability: Reduce nitrogen content in waste to minimize environmental impact.
  • Increase animal welfare: Reduce the incidence of pododermatitis through a formulation with lower protein levels.
  • Obtain better quality food: Decrease the presence of myopathies in breast meat, thus improving its qualitative characteristics
