The MEÆTPACK project aims to develop a study of sustainable packaging for the meat and alternative protein sectors.

  • The Packaging Cluster and INNOVACC, the Catalan meat and alternative protein cluster, are joining forces with Inédito to develop this project.
  • MEÆTPACK will develop a sector-specific decalogue of meat and alternative protein packaging for manufacturers, packers, distributors, and companies processing meat and alternative protein.

The project MeætPack It is a collaborative venture between the INNOVACC Cluster and the Packaging Cluster to prepare a sectoral study of meat packaging and alternative protein in the context of the Circular Economy and Ecodesign, with the support of’ inèdit to develop the research and content of the project outcome: the sector guide.

The study will thoroughlyevaluate and analyze the different solutions of packaging for meat and alternative protein products present on the market from the point of view of sustainability, considering both the environmental impact of the packaging itself as well as the reduction of food wasteMarket trends, barriers and opportunities, and practical case studies will also be explored.

The resulting guide's target audience is companies that are part of the value chain for these products, including packaging manufacturers and manufacturers of the components needed for manufacturing (raw materials, inks, adhesives, coatings, etc.), packagers, distributors, meat and alternative protein product manufacturers, and recyclers.

In this way, with the project MeætPack, the sector is expected to be supported in adapting packaging to new legislation, such as European Directive 2019/904 on single-use plastics, Law 7/2022 on waste and contaminated soil for a circular economy, Royal Decree 1055/2022, of December 27, on Packaging and Packaging Waste, as well as the future waste law in Catalonia.

The project, in addition to generating a guide, will carry out multi-agent and multi-company sessions that will allow communication between them in order to generate business opportunities, synergies and collaborative economy with the aim of implementingecodesign and the circular economy in packaging, helping to minimize resource use and promoting reuse and recyclability to reduce waste.

The MeætPack decalogue will also take into account the principles of the hierarchy established by the Waste and Contaminated Land Act, which ranks, from highest to lowest priority, prevention, reuse, recyclability, material recovery, and, finally, energy recovery.

MeætPack is a project to implement new products or services on the market, funded with the support of theCatalan Waste Agency. within the 2022 call for grants for projects to promote the circular economy.
