Project approved online for AEI 2023 aid.
Caudophagy represents one of the most serious problems in the swine industry. This is cannibalism, or biting, that certain animals exert on their conspecifics on their tails. There are many causes for caudophagy to occur, from lack of food, lack of ventilation, temperature, other environmental conditions, the pig's search for blood, etc.
This behavior affects animal welfare and represents a very significant loss of productivity in pig production and, in addition, in many cases, causes infections or even death of animals. Furthermore, queue removal is not approved by EU legislation.
This project aims to develop a tool to measure in the slaughterhouse the degree of impact of the tail on each animal, that is, it will be an individual measure. With this information, it will be connected through traceability to the farms to investigate if there is a model capable of predicting it and, ultimately, by prescribing corrective measures, reduce or eliminate it.
Thus, the main objective of the project is to industrially investigate a solution that allows obtaining an individual assessment model of tailphagy based on image analysis using artificial vision to implement plans to reduce it on farms and during transport.
